The Big Idea: The most important thing is to get all your students to work on problems and actually care about getting them right. Every student needs to think they could be chosen (Use a random generator). Games that interest them that are not always math related, but usually they have problem solving involved. The games must be completed quickly at the end of the day or in small chunks throughout the period. The points they earn to play the game can also be earned throughout the week so that you only play once a week. Remember that the points are usually turns they get in the game. Do not make too many groups because you will have to check too many problems. You can also make games be whole class and at the amounts of points are how many people that are randomly chosen to win a prize.

Dry Erase Board Game
Each student has a dry erase board and they work with a partner. I role a dice to decide which person raises the board to check the answer (Odds are the left person and evens are the right person). I keep track of the points for everyone on the front dry erase board.
1 on 1
Students compete against their partner to solve problems. When they finish they put their pencil down and cannot pick it back up. The student who finishes first gets 2 points if they are right, while the person who finishes second gets 1 point if they are right.
Teach your Neighbor
Students get in pairs. There are two problems to be solved. The students take turns describing to the other student how to solve the problem. The student who is listening writes down what the other student is telling them. They then trade the paper and jobs.
Whole Class Group Tests
The whole class takes an open note group test. The teacher grades 2 tests and averages them. Everyone gets that grade. If a student does better on their individual test, then I do not count the Group Test in their grade. Remember to make them worth a very small amount of points. |
